Take a trip to Khajuraho on your India vacation.
Khajuraho is a town located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, about 620 km southeast of Delhi and makes an interesting stopover on India tours.
Khajuraho is known for the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculptures. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments is considered one of the “seven wonders” of India.
Made of sandstone, the temples were built between 950 and 1050 A.D., during the Chandela dynasty of Central India which declined in the 13th century. The temples were eventually buried under a dense sea of date palm trees, giving Khajuraho its name (Khajur in Hindi means ‘date’).
In the land of Kama Sutra, the temples reflect the Chandela dynasty's passion and immense appreciation for the forbidden art and represent Indo-Aryan architecture, all to be experienced on a trip to India.
Divided into three sections, west, east, and south, every temple features a depiction of royalty, armies, wrestling, kinship, war, courtship, marriage, lovemaking, music and dancing, spiritual teachings, union, meditation, bliss, gods, goddesses, plants, animals and an abundance of all human forms.
Khajuraho offers visitors local cuisine on Indian travel, including their famous desserts, yoga at Arhanta Yoga Ashram, craft shopping, and the Annual Dance Festival of Khajuraho, which happens in early February and features classical Indian dances.
