Myanmar is a multi-ethnic country with multiple ethnic groups having their own traditions, languages, and customs. Some of the major ethnic groups are Bamar, Shan, Karen, and, Mon. While in Myanmar, you can experience these and other ethnic groups and immerse yourself in their culture.

Thanks to the relative isolation of the country, Myanmar still practices traditional techniques. Craftspeople create incredible work with their hand but do not use glue or power tools. The arts and crafts are based on ten highly priced skills such as sculpture in wood, sculpting with stone, blacksmithing, bronze casting, and many more. You can see these skills everywhere, from drinking cups to tinkling brass bells found in temples.

When it comes to traditional dress, different ethnic groups have their own way of dressing. Having said that, there is a common attire for both men and women. The men wear Longyi, which is a sheet of cloth often sewn in a cylindrical shape and worn around the waist. Women also wear Longyi along with a blouse and a shawl. When you are in Myanmar, make sure to try their traditional outfit and get an authentic experience of their local culture.

If you enjoy cooler weather, the cool and dry season (November to February) is the best time to visit Myanmar. During this period, the skies are clear with cool breeze in the air, perfect for outdoor activities. It is the best time to visit ancient temples and other sightseeing places. Though the dry season is ideal time to visit, it is peak season and overcrowded. So, make your plans accordingly.

On the other hand, if you don't mind occasional showers, rainy season (June to October) is worth visiting. This period is when the landscapes are lush green with fewer travellers. It is the perfect time to immerse yourself in tranquility of mother nature.  

The summer (March to May) is the perfect time to experience the mountainous regions. Since the temperatures are high, it is the best time to explore the peaks like Shan Hills. If you can tolerate the heat, then there is nothing more relaxing than spending some beautiful moments on the beach. Myanmar is home to some stunning beaches with pristine white sands and crystal clear waters. While on the beach you can also enjoy water sports and indulge in some mouthwatering local dishes. 

When travelling to Myanmar, you need to know certain things for a smooth experience. Here are a few things you should keep in mind during your Myanmar tours:

Respect local culture. Traditions and customs are deeply rooted in Myanmar culture, so be sensitive towards their culture. Wear appropriate attire before you visit a temple and remove your shoes when entering a temple.

Bargaining is allowed. Bargaining is common in local markets, but be respectful when you bargain.

Learn a few important words and phrases of the local language. Burmese is predominantly spoken in Myanmar. Three-quarters of the locals speak the Burmese language, so brush up on some important words like Maingalarpar (Hello), which would be helpful in connecting with the locals. Other than this, English is spoken, but in tourist areas only.

Ask permission before taking photos. It is advised to ask permission before clicking photos of locals or other historical sites. Religious places have rules and regulations for photography, so ask before you click photos of religious places.

Check visa requirements. Check visa requirements before you travel to Myanmar. For some countries visa is not required while others have to apply for visas via e-visas.  

Burmese food is a blend of seafood, noodles, and rice spiced with a variety of spices. Along with these, fruits are also an integral part of their diet. The food spices and techniques are mostly influenced by its neighbours — India, China, and Thailand. Nan Gyi Thoke is a must-try dish, which is a salad of rice noodles, chicken or beef curry, chilli oil, coriander, sliced shallots, and chickpea powder. If tofu is something you crave, try Burmese Tofu. It is made from chickpeas and can be enjoyed in the form of fritters served with a tangy tamarind dip. With one bite, you'll experience instant pleasure.

The Burmese food is diverse, and even their beverages are diverse. Some of the popular beverages include Myanmar Beer and Moh Let Phet. The Myanmar Beer is a light lager, perfect for summer. Moh Let Phet is a sweet palm toddy made from the sap of toddy palm trees.
